Open Street Map Geography Awareness Week

  • Date: 15 November 2021 from 16:00 to 19:00

  • Event location: Online event and classroom 0-2, Viale del Risorgimento 2, Bologna

As in previous years, the Geomatics area of DICAM will host on November 15, 2021, from 4 to 7 pm, a Mapathon, a volunteer mapping event (crowdmapping) as part of the international initiative "Open Street Map Geography Awareness Week".

The event will take place this year both in presence (classroom 0-2 in Viale Risorgimento) and online on the Teams platform.

The activity - in English - will primarily involve students of the courses "Geomatics for Urban and Regional Analysis" and "Applied Geomatics" but is open to anyone interested, students or not. No previous experience is necessary.

During the session the OpenStreetMap (OSM) project will be introduced and participants will be shown how to take the first steps in contributing to it. OpenStreetMap is a free map of the entire world, constantly created and edited by millions of volunteers around the world through a crowdmapping process, which can provide a basic cartography for areas of the world that lack it; its availability is essential to support emergency operations in case of disasters and for many humanitarian projects, also related to the effects of Climate Change.

The mapping actions are conducted on the basis of high-resolution satellite images accessible via the Internet.

The event is coordinated by Gabriele Bitelli, with the collaboration of Emanuele Mandanici, Alessandro Lambertini, Francesca Trevisiol, Pietro Mattivi; in the same week similar initiatives are carried out within the "OpenStreetMap Geography Awareness Week" in many Universities and research centers around the world.

NOTE: to actively participate in the initiative is required the use of your laptop and is strongly recommended an external mouse.
