Federica Tamburini, a researcher in our Department, has been awarded the prestigious Young Scientist Award 2025. The winners of this edition were announced in Brussels during a ceremony held on November 25, 2025.

Dr. Tamburini was the winner in the “Hydrogen cross-cutting activities” category, one of two Italian researchers to receive an award in this edition and one of five overall winners.
The research that earned her the award actively promotes hydrogen safety. The project uses large-scale experiments and risk modeling specifically applied to systems using liquid hydrogen and blue hydrogen.

During the project, assessment methodologies based on resilience and probabilistic methods were developed. The aim of these approaches is to reduce the risks inherent in cryogenic storage, bunkering, and infrastructure design. This work is essential to help define standards in the sector and accelerate the safe deployment of hydrogen.

Commenting on the award, Tamburini emphasized the importance of his field of study: “Ensuring the safety of hydrogen technologies is essential to building trust and accelerating the energy transition.”

The Young Scientist Award is organized annually by Hydrogen Europe Research and is recognized as the benchmark award for scientists under 35 working in the field of hydrogen. The 2025 edition saw widespread participation, with 42 researchers from 34 universities, academic institutions, and research centers located in 15 countries. The winners receive €1,000 and a trophy.

The Young Scientist Award is part of the EU Hydrogen Research and Innovation Days 2025, held in Brussels on November 24 and 25, 2025.
