LABIOTEC - Laboratory of Environmental Biotechnology and Biorefineries
Microbiology, development and modeling of bioprocesses, biochemistry and molecular biology, analytical chemistry.
What the laboratory focuses on
The Laboratory of Environmental Biotechnology and Biorefineries - LABIOTEC conducts research in the field of biotechnology with the following objectives:
- Bioremediation
- Valorization of organic waste
- Production of industrially relevant compounds through the isolation or use of microbial resources and toxicity assessment.
Contaminated soils, sediments, and waters are treated through the setup, management, and monitoring of specific biotechnological processes. The valorization of wastewater, waste, and surpluses from the food industry and the organic fraction of municipal solid waste is achieved through the recovery or production of fine chemicals and biofuels via microbial or enzymatic fermentation or bioconversion.
Microorganisms of environmental and industrial interest are also isolated, cultivated, and characterized for application in the developed and studied processes.
