LADIC - Chemical Engineering Teaching Laboratory

Teaching laboratories dedicated to supporting educational initiatives in the fields of chemical and process engineering

Two experimental laboratories are dedicated respectively to teaching on transport phenomena and unit operations, while a computer laboratory allows learning and use of simulation software that are reference tools in the chemical and process industry.

The computer-based teaching laboratory comprises 20 workstations, on which the following software is installed:

  • HYSYS v14: software for steady-state and dynamic simulation of equipment and plants in the process industry.
  • Fluent: software for three-dimensional fluid dynamics modeling.

Packed bed columns: demonstrative educational equipment for continuous gas-liquid contact systems using 1/4" Raschig rings. The apparatus is instrumented with differential pressure meters to evaluate pressure losses under various fluid dynamic conditions.

Heat exchangers: demonstrative educational equipment for heat exchange apparatuses. Modules are available to replicate different operational configurations (double-pipe heat exchanger, shell and tube heat exchanger).

The apparatus is instrumented with temperature and differential pressure meters to evaluate performance under various operating conditions and compare them with those derived from theoretical models.

Cooling tower: demonstrative educational equipment for water-cooled evaporative apparatuses. Modules are available to replicate fillings with different surface areas. The apparatus is instrumented with temperature, humidity, and flow rate meters to evaluate performance under various operating conditions.

Measurement of material diffusivities: various experimental apparatuses allow educational experiments on the measurement of material diffusivities (ion diffusivity in a liquid, diffusion in vapors in stagnant films). The various experiments apply different measurement principles (electrical conductivity, level, system weight) to evaluate diffusivity.

Control systems: educational equipment for level control including piezoresistive DPcell for continuous control and a conductive meter for ON/OFF control; educational equipment (mixer) for continuous pH control.
