Remote-working Multiple impacts in the Age of disruptions: socioeconomic transformations, territorial rethinking, and policy actions

REMAKING

Abstract

Project REMAKING is about industrial and production transformations triggered by “megatrends” (such as digitalization and flexibilization processes) and post-shock adjustments. In this framework we consider the phenomenon of Remote Working (RW) arrangements in the labour market, as a tool for business, economic and territorial rethinking. REMAKING contends that if the multiple effects induced by RW on individuals, business models and socio-economic arena are properly addressed by policymakers, RW might become a strong lever shaping ongoing social, economic and spatial structural changes. At the basis of REMAKING there is a profound consideration that the ongoing socio-economic megatrends have initiated the practice of RW while recent external shocks (i.e., the pandemic and Russia’s war in Ukraine) have consolidated its diffusion through different forms in several contexts. Through a trans-disciplinary research, REMAKING aims at delivering an evidence-based policy-oriented framework assessing opportunities and constraints of RW in urban and rural areas, tackling socio-economic and spatial inequalities. These objectives are achieved through a large survey and participatory qualitative research across 4 case studies: digital nomadism, post-pandemic, high-skilled in hi-tech sectors and enforced remote workers. Case studies encompass 7 countries (Italy, Greece, Portugal, Germany, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Ireland) across 14 urban-rural areas. Results will be elaborated, discussed and put in place through a continuous engagement of local stakeholders and a pilot action in Bologna (Italy). REMAKING will achieve an advanced understanding of RW multiple impacts and trigger mutual learning and place-based policies around planning, design and promotion of territorial socio-economic resilience and spatial development.
