Engineering geology

Research activity focuses on the stratigraphy, tectonics, geomorphology, applied and engineering geology, and hydrogeology of the Northern Apennines, part of the Southern Alps, and Po plain. In mountainous regions, research topics include slope stability assessment and landslide risk mitigation, and rock mass and slope characterization and monitoring, also through the application of remote sensing and numerical modelling methods. The same techniques are also applied within flood plains to investigate the structural integrity of artificial levees, and the interaction between flood protection structures and aquifers.

Research themes

Research themes include:

  • Stratigraphy, tectonics, and geomorphology
Research in the field of stratigraphy and tectonics investigates the tectono-sedimentary and active tectonics of the Northern Apennine. Research in the field of geomorphology focuses on the genesis and the evolution of large landslides in the Northern Apennine, particularly within the Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany regions.
  • Geomechanics and rock mass characterization
Research activity aims to the characterization and stability analysis of rock slopes and large landslides in rock. To this end, activities conducted include the estimation of strength and deformability parameters of intact rock, and the assessment of the characteristics and degree of fracturing of rock masses, also through the use of remote sensing methods such as laser scanning and digital photogrammetry.
  • Numerical modelling of large landslides
Advanced numerical modelling methods (including finite element, distinct element, and hybrid finite-discrete methods) are employed to identify and assess the role of geological and environmental factors in the formation and evolution of major landslides. Research is conducted at sites located in Italy (within the Southern Alps and the Northern Apennines) and abroad (US and Canada).
