LASTM - Laboratory of Materials Science and Technology

Development of new materials, comprehensive analysis of material characteristics and performance, with a particular focus on studying the correlations between the physical-mechanical properties of materials and their structural and microstructural characteristics.

What does the Laboratory do?

LATSM provides technical and scientific support for research and educational activities in the area of materials science and technology for the industrial, construction, and restoration sectors.

It develops new materials and performs comprehensive analyses to evaluate material characteristics and performance, with a particular focus on studying the correlations between the physical-mechanical properties of materials and their structural and microstructural characteristics.

In the fields of civil engineering, architecture, and restoration:

  • Development and characterization of sustainable materials that combine high durability with the use of recycled materials and resources from renewable sources.
  • Development of geopolymers from natural raw materials and/or waste fractions.
  • Development of new consolidants, protective coatings, and technologies for cultural heritage preservation.

In the industrial sector:

  • Corrosion and protection of metal alloys.
  • Polymer and composite materials for advanced applications and their processing technologies.
  • Biopolymers, bioadditives, and bioplastics from renewable sources, and their formulation for industrial uses.

In the biomedical field:

  • Biocompatible and bioactive polymeric and ceramic materials for tissue engineering scaffolds.

Consulting and services

If you are a business, a public or private entity, contact us: we will work together to develop a project plan tailored to your needs or to request a lab test. You can benefit from the laboratory's research excellence and equipment, applied to your field of activity.

Contacts

The Ceramic Center, a research and experimentation center for the ceramic industry, also collaborates with LATSM. It is managed by a University Consortium, which includes Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna, Confindustria Ceramica, and Legacoop Produzione e Servizi.

The Ceramic Center offers equipment for the chemical-physical, mechanical, and microstructural characterization of ceramic materials.
