Abstract: The seminar will present the experience of the HAP4MARBLE project, funded by the European Commission through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (Global Fellowship - Fellow: Dr. Enrico Sassoni, Supervisor: Dr. Elisa Franzoni). The seminar will illustrate the genesis of the project proposal, with possible hints for a successful application for this type of grants, and the main scientific results obtained during the project. As sketched below, the project is aimed at developing a new treatment for the conservation of marble artworks exposed outdoors, by formation of hydroxyapatite (HAP, the mineral constituent of human teeth and bones) over the surface and inside the cracks of marble. Thanks to HAP formation, it is possible to: (i) protect marble against chemical dissolution in rain; (ii) mechanically strengthen marble against grain detachment and loss; (iii) make marble “self-cleaning” for a long time, in all cases outperforming commercially available treatments.
