The group carries out scientific and educational-training activities in the field of Chemical Industrial Plants and Processes. The sector promotes the study of methods of analysis, development and design of industrial processes and plants based on chemical-physical and biological transformation of the matter and aimed at the production of goods and services, as well as the prevention and mitigation of modifications of the habitats induced by anthropic activities or settlements, including. the study of processes and plant design, starting from the evaluation of the fundamental aspects to end up with quantified schemes of the process, the choice of materials, sizing and specification of the equipment; the study of the influence of the selection and management of raw materials, catalysts, products, residues, by-products, auxiliary fluids; the study of the general energy balance and of the different forms of energy; the definition of the reagent system and of the equipment to build up the process; the development of functional diagrams including protection and control instrumentation and cost evaluation; the development of methodologies for the analysis and modeling of chemical industrial systems, equipment, processes and plants, as well as the application to the development of innovative industrial and environmental technologies, biotechnologies and nanotechnologies; the analysis of the safety and environmental compatibility aspects of plants and industrial processes based on chemical-physical transformation of the matter, with particular reference to methodologies for the development and design of processes, technologies and plants based on sustainable, safe and with reduced environmental impact.
The reference sectors are those relating to the process industry and to chemical and biochemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food, biotechnological, energy, extraction, treatment and refining of oil and natural gas, environmental protection and site remediation.
